The passion play in Oberammergau attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every 10 years. In 2022, the game is set up for the 42nd time. Then it is 12 years since the last time since the planned game in 2020 was postponed to 2022 due to the situation around Covid-19.
The games in Oberammergau have their origins in the Thirty Years’ War, when war and plague also took many lives in the city. in 1633, therefore, the citizens of the city promised that they would perform the story of Christ’s suffering every ten years, and at Pentecost in 1634 they began to fulfill this promise, and the play was set up and performed for the very first time. The games have thus been listed for 388 years.
During the 18th century, the play had gained momentum and become very popular, and the audience made a pilgrimage to the small alpine village from all over Germany. In 2022, the play will be performed for the 42nd time – and once again it is the people of Oberammergau who are performing the passion play.
In the five-hour-long play, you will see half of Oberammergau’s population in turn as they perform perhaps the world’s most famous history in a masterful way on the city’s outdoor stage. The Passion play deals with the whole story from Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem until his crucifixion and resurrection. There is a 3 hour break in the middle of the performance which we use to eat dinner. The impressive performance of the story unfolds further until the dawn of darkness.
The price will be postes soon, but everyone must be prepared to pay a deposit of NOK 2500, – per person two weeks after registration. The deposit is not refundable, as there are very special rules associated with this game.
The tour guide on the trip is the bishop of Tunsberg, Jan Otto Myrseth.
